The Toughest Lift For An Athlete is the Mental Lift
Most likely you’ve done it many times — the new years fitness pledge in which you are going to get into the best condition of your life. It all goes great for about a week or two, and then slowly drift into the old destructive exercise and eating behaviors. Perhaps we forget that the greatest lift in any routine is not the dumbbell curls, or the leg lifts, or the back extensions, or the squats, or the crunches … indeed the biggest lift in the mental push that is required to get beyond the captivity and grip of our own nasty habits.
Your Fitness Transformation Into A New Life Of Fitness Will Go Fast!
Depending upon who you talk to, it takes from 4 to 6 weeks of repetition to transform a repeated action into a bonafide habit. So what we want to do this new year is not make a big proclamation for the whole year — but rather simply make a fitness and dieting goal for nothing more than six weeks!! Now that is a mental lift that we can all do. Think about it. Eight weeks ago was Halloween. It’s less time than that! That time frame of 6 weeks is the key to the new you that you are looking for.
Forget About 3 Months From Now!
Forget thoughts about next summer. Forget thoughts about Valentines day! You’ve only got to commit for six weeks of exercise and eating right. If you are beginner, just try one hour in the gym three days a week, one half hour walk every day you are not in the gym — and then simply eat six 300 calorie meals a day (if you are a guy) or six 250 calorie meals a day (if you are a woman). Make it a balanced meal of fresh fruit, vegetables, lean fish or chicken or tofu — how you want to combine and what foods you choose are entirely up to you. This is the only pledge you have to make. Just pledge 6 weeks of eating right and exercising. Why only six weeks? Simple. After six weeks, you new lifestyle will have become a habit — a good habit, and you’ll find yourself on entirely new plane of empowerment.
Turn Your New Routine Into A Healthy Habit
But again, don’t even think about that. This is simply about the first 6 weeks of the new year — You are simply aiming for February 12th. Now the 12th is an important date. It is the day of Mardis Gras — Fat Tuesday as they call it in New Orleans. But you will not be fat. In fact you will be leaner and fitter and feeling better. And rather feeling like you’ve got to gorge yourself with food, you’ll be in control and you’ll feel like a new you — because you will be a new you. Now if you are more skilled in eating right and sticking to an exercise routine — simply ramp it up a bit. If you are used to running a mile — make it 1.5 miles. Same with the diet. We can always improve the quality of our food intake and prepare dishes that are more healthy — so just get to work. This 6 week pledge is for everyone.
Forget Resolutions — Make a Pledge Muscle Up and Lean Down.
So take the pledge now. Try something really old fashioned: Sit down and take a pencil and paper out and hand write what your goals are, what you want to accomplish and write your pledge to make your new 6 week goal. And stick a nice congratulations card in it that says, “Welcome to the new you”. Then address it to yourself. Put a stamp on it, and stick it in the mail. Your Pledge will travel all over the place. Your envelope will come into contact with hands that have no idea that inside is a pledge that is transforming a life. But you’ll know. This is your secret. This is your guarantee that this time your pledge will work. You’ll get it in the mail but don’t open your fitness pledge until the 6 weeks is over on February 12th. Then open it up on that day and touch the words, read them, and celebrate! So take the pledge today. Write your letter today. Mail it today. And then beginning the morning of January 1st, get to work. Happy New Year.
